Bali Waste Emergency

From BASAbaliWiki

This is a Response to the Sampah Upacara wikithon

According to research on waste management from dipura ceremonies into rdf (refuse derived fuel) conducted by Fransiskus Vebrian Kenedey, Dewa Ngakan Ari Yudiaskara, Made Vina Maharani from Mahasaraswati University, the waste from religious ceremonies is dominated by biodegradable waste with a composition of around 80%, such as banana leaves, flowers, coconut leaves, coconut fibre, food offerings and so on.

Overcoming the problem of religious waste can no longer rely solely on the addition of landfills. What is needed now is an independent and local wisdom-based waste management innovation.

Teba, which in the Balinese tradition is an area behind the house for gardening and processing organic waste, can be adapted to be a solution in waste management in the temple area. Modern Teba is a waste management centre that focuses on religious ceremony waste. With a composting system, the organic waste generated can be reprocessed to support organic farming in Bali.

A Temple is a Holy place, it is not somewhere to leave your trash. I cannot bare to see so much trash in the temple. The temple should be treated with the utmost respect. Also we should not make work for other people who will have to clean up the trash we have left behind. This is about respecting God and respecting each other. The best offering we can give is a clean temple which is well cared for and a clean environment. Lets show a good example to our children. Lets keep Bali clean and holy and the Gods with bless us abundantly.

If you bring offerings to the temple but leave your trash there, what does that achieve? What does it say about your true intentions. Take your trash home and dispose of it in the proper way.

This entry misses the point. The organic waste is not a problem. It will soon return to nature. The big problem is the huge amount of plastic waste which is left behind.
