Detoxifying Overtourism in Bali: Merging Local Wisdom and Technology for Sustainable Tourism
This is a Response to the Pariwisata Berkelanjutan wikithon
According to Bapan Pusat Statistik Bali’s (BPS), from January to November 2023, 4.79 million international tourists visited Bali, a 169% increase from the previous year. However, most tourists concentrate in South Bali, particularly in Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu, causing overcrowding, rising prices, and resource depletion. Meanwhile, North, East, and West Bali remain underdeveloped. Luxury hotels consume 65% of the island’s water supply, limiting access for local communities. A solution combining local wisdom and technology can detoxify overtourism. A smart tourism app can direct visitors to traditional villages, subak ecotourism, and Tri Hita Karana-based sites. Blockchain-based reservations can regulate visitor capacity in crowded areas. Digital campaigns with local communities can educate tourists on sustainable travel. An eco-points system can reward visitors for exploring lesser-known destinations and supporting local businesses, promoting a more balanced and sustainable tourism model.
