Protecting Bali: Tackling Overtourism in Bali

From BASAbaliWiki

This is a Response to the Pariwisata Berkelanjutan wikithon

Bali is rich in natural beauty, culture, and art, making tourism its main attraction. Tourism helps drive the local economy, but the negative impacts of overtourism are beginning to emerge, such as waste accumulation, strained infrastructure, water crises, and cultural shifts.

Local residents are starting to feel disturbed, prompting the government to take action, including increasing the tourist tax. Currently, the tourist tax is only IDR 150,000 per person—a relatively low amount. Considering that foreign tourists generally have stronger financial means, this needs to be emphasized. Although it may still seem insufficient, this policy is a reasonable first step.

Furthermore, the government must reinforce regulations regarding ‘Hak Pakai’ (Usage Rights) for foreign tourists. Many of them take advantage of land and property ownership, contributing to infrastructure pressure. Firm action should not be taken by the government alone; we, as the local people of Bali, must also play a role in preserving Bali and ensuring that local communities are not further marginalized.
