Tackling overtourism at Bali: strategy toward sustainable tourism
This is a Response to the Pariwisata Berkelanjutan wikithon
Overtourism in Bali can have positive effects and can also have significant negative effects, such as damaging the existing local environment and culture. And if that negative persists will affect the future. Detoxing these "poisons" therefore requires a multi-faceted approach. First, strict regulations need to be implemented, including restrictions on the number of tourists in certain destinations and increased entry costs to vulnerable locations. Second, diversification of tourist destinations needs to be encouraged, promoting less crowded areas and offering more authentic tourist experiences. Third, community education and awareness, both tourist and local, are essential. Campaigns on sustainable tourism and travel ethics should be intensified intensively. Fourth, empowering local communities through training and employment opportunities in the sustainable tourism sector will ensure economic benefits are evenly distributed and reduce exploitation. With a comprehensive strategy involving governments, businesses, and communities, Bali could address overtourism and remain a sustainable destination.
