Description

We are from the bioranger team, have a mission to influence the community to get used to using biopores as a tool that can reduce organic waste as a place for composting and water absorption. This activity was carried out in the Washington DC residential area and in Bali precisely at SMAN 3 Denpasar. This movement is so simple, but can be used all the time, anywhere and is significant. you can definitely do it!!! This concept of biopore is being replicated through the biopore infiltration hole. The biopore infiltration hole is a cylindrical hole (usually coated with plastic pipe) that is planted in the ground vertically. Biopore infiltration holes usually has a diameter of 10 cm and is planted with a depth of 100 cm.

Why does the innovation or project matter?

Household waste is the largest class of waste in the world, so if we pay more attention to it, we can at least reprocess the organic waste and return it to mother nature which is beneficial to nature. Because with this biopore hole, we can change our habit of throwing and hoarding waste, especially organic waste so that it is left to become a meaningless item. but with this action, we can reduce at least 20% of the organic waste around us and make it into compost which is so meaningful for the soil, plants and ecosystems around us.

How do you or your team know that the innovation or project is working (or making a positive contribution)?

This biopore hole is expected to solve the problem of organic waste, the problem of organic waste in Washington, DC and Bali. With the movement to make biopore holes, the problem of organic waste that accumulates will be resolved. In addition to becoming compost, the organic waste will produce a lot of nutrients that will fertilize the soil; we can improve the soil's water absorption and reduce the greenhouse gasses (CO2 and methane) as well as of course preventing floods. So that from what was previously useless waste, if processed properly it will be very useful. We can identify it by seeing how much waste is reduced in the environment with the biopores implemented. and we can see how the community uses these biopores as a place to compost organic waste and make it a habit for them.

What has contributed to the innovation or project working?

The things that contributed to our project working includes the high amount of organic waste present in balinese homes and schools, usually from the residue of religious practices such as canang, busung, and so on. Similarly in the US, the sheer amount of organic waste produced from households is enough to guarantee our project's usefulness and success. There was also great support from each of our schools and neighborhoods that allowed us to gain success on our biopore project.

What else would help the innovation or project be more successful?

With the community’s low awareness regarding the problem of a polluted environment, the indifferent attitude given is very influential when running this biopores project. So what would help the project to become more successful is the community’s support and raised awareness on their part. We need to become a milestone and lead the movement towards a green environment even if we’re still in a small scope. We cannot carry such a project out alone, as we would also need the guidance and help of adults to assist us. The obstacle is how we need to ensure that the local community can start a new habit of collecting organic waste and disposing of it in the biopores regularly.

Is the innovation or project self-sustaining? If not, what needs to be done for that to happen?

Of course this project can last a long time and is sustainable because we can use this biopore repeatedly at any time and condition. This biopore is also not easily damaged if it continues to be used and maintained.

What Balinese value does this initiative invoke?

In Indonesia, especially in Bali we have a lot of serious organic waste from religious ceremonies and other customs which are piled up after use. After a long time of being thrown away as waste only to defile the environment,we intend to reduce canang waste (prayer facilities) by reprocessing them into compost with the biopore hole method. Our main goal in this project is to suppress the amount of residue and waste from the religious practices,so that it can be applied not only in public schools in Bali or in the home environment but can also be made in the temples.
