Description

Environmental education through the implementation of educational programs on waste sorting and the establishment of a Waste Bank

Why does the innovation or project matter?

The current waste problem has become an important focal issue and needs to be resolved. Indonesia is the world’s second largest contributor of plastic waste to the oceans after China. If this situation is not addressed, then in a few years the numbers of fish and other biota in the oceans will be overwhelmed by the amount of plastic entering the ocean. At present there are still many communities that have not been well educated about the importance of waste management and the danger posed if the waste produced is not managed properly. This initiative aims to provide understanding to the public about the importance of waste management through educational programs focussed on school-age children so that they have a sound understanding starting now about good waste management practices. Waste can be managed by maximizing the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), for both organic waste and non-organic waste. In addition, in this initiative efforts will also made to stimulate the public's interest in carrying out waste management through the implementation of Waste Banks, whereby waste produced is exchanged for money. The waste collected in this way will then be channelled to recycling plants. It is hoped that this initiative will reduce the amount of waste dumped into the environment, particularly plastic waste, and also reduce the amount of waste taken to landfill.
