Information about Holiday or Ceremony

Nyekjek Api di Nusa Penida
Nyejek api BASabali WIki 2.jpg

Where did this ceremony take place:

In English

Nyekjek api means 'to step on the fire'. This ritual is also known as 'nyekjek buta'. This unique ritual is performed by the people of Pundukaha Kaja Village, Nusa Penida on the day of Pangrupukan or Tawur Agung Kesanga (see entry “Tawur Agung”).

Although at first glance it looks similar to the tradition of fire rituals in other parts of Bali, this tradition has several differences.

In the nyekjek api tradition, the youth collect danyuh (dried coconut leaves) and other materials to light. When the flames breaks out, they take turns kicking and jumping over the flames. The youths also carry a long stick with a tip similar to the axis of a torch in this ceremony.

This tradition is not always done right on the day of Tawur Agung, but can be done a few days before Nyepi. This unique tradition is also accompanied by the traditional Nusa Penida gambelan and preceded by a prayer ceremony at Kahyangan Tiga.

In Balinese

In Indonesian

Nyejek api berarti ‘menginjak api’.
