Developing Bali: Education and Regulation For Sustainable Tourism
This is a Response to the Pariwisata Berkelanjutan wikithon
To mitigate the negative impacts of overtourism in Bali, the first step is to educate the local community on the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to tourism. This education can be carried out through community outreach programs in local banjar (village councils). For example, after communal clean-up activities (gotong royong), residents can engage in informal discussions about how to sustain healthy tourism practices. Additionally, during the annual celebrations of Seka Truna Truni (youth organizations), tourism awareness competitions can be held to encourage greater involvement and concern among the younger generation. In the digital sphere, Balinese youth can also contribute by creating educational media content or news coverage highlighting tourism developments and issues in Bali. Once the community is well-informed, the next step is to collaborate with local authorities to advocate for the establishment of laws that govern sustainable tourism. These regulations would ensure that visitors respect local customs, rules, and cultural values. With clear policies in place, both residents and tourists will be more likely to comply and take part in preserving Bali. Rather than remaining silent, it is better to “fight” alongside the government—through thoughtful and constructive means—for a better future for Bali.
