Bali Tourism Is Strong If Using Overtourism Poison Drugs
This is a Response to the Pariwisata Berkelanjutan wikithon
People of Bali, are you aware that Bali is now overcrowded? Everywhere, both foreign and domestic tourists are visiting the island in large numbers. Due to this overwhelming influx, Bali is currently experiencing overtourism.
What is overtourism in Bali? Overtourism refers to the excessive number of tourists present in Bali, while the available accommodations and public facilities are no longer able to adequately support the volume of travelers staying and moving around the island.
How did this happen? What caused overtourism in Bali? The primary cause is the overwhelming popularity of certain destinations. Did you know? Many destinations in Bali are highly favored by both foreign and domestic visitors. This has led to tourists flocking only to well-known spots, while in fact, many other places in Bali remain unexplored. This surge in tourism has impacted traffic, safety, and public order, as not everyone can effectively manage the resulting congestion. Not all tourists who come to Bali behave appropriately; some exhibit disruptive behavior, contributing to rising crime rates. This highlights the need for improved management of tourism, which requires collaboration between the community and the government. The local people must assert their rights and fulfill their responsibilities to ensure that they are not merely spectators in their own land. This concern is further exacerbated by the fact that many foreigners now own property and businesses in Bali, while local residents are often forced to sell their land due to financial hardship. Irresponsible tourism has led to a blurring of the rights and responsibilities of Balinese people, often benefitting outsiders instead. What are the impacts of overtourism in Bali? There are five major impacts currently being felt: 1) Traffic Congestion. It is widely acknowledged that traffic congestion has become a daily issue due to the high number of motor vehicles on the roads. This congestion contributes significantly to air pollution caused by vehicle emissions, worsening Bali's climate and making it increasingly hot. In addition to air pollution, traffic jams also disrupt the efficiency of goods delivery services. 2) Rapid Increase in Waste Volume. The surge in waste volume is primarily driven by the increased discharge of household, industrial, and other waste sources. This situation has worsened environmental pollution in Bali, especially because waste management has not kept pace with the uncontrolled growth in tourism. 3) Rising Crime Rates. No one desires a rise in criminal activity. However, recently there has been an increase in crime involving both local residents and foreign tourists. This is largely due to insufficient oversight, regulation, and law enforcement. As Balinese citizens, we must strive to prevent crime from spreading further across the island. 4) Loss of Green and Agricultural Land. Over the past decade, development on green and agricultural land has expanded rapidly in Bali. Many individuals have sold their land to be converted into rental properties, villas, homestays, entertainment venues, and more. The reduction in green and agricultural areas is a direct consequence of overtourism, which demands more land for tourism, entertainment, industry, and accommodations. 5) Massive Development of Accommodation and Industry. The large-scale development of accommodation and industry has both positive and negative consequences. On the one hand, it creates new job opportunities that support the local economy, especially as overtourism has generated greater income potential than in the past. On the other hand, it disrupts land-use planning and contributes to the decline of green and agricultural spaces.
Solutions to the Negative Impacts of Overtourism: Education and Supervision of Tourists at the Local Level.
It is essential to educate local communities and village leaders to ensure that tourists understand and respect the appropriate local customs and etiquette. With proper education and supervision at the community level, inappropriate tourist behavior can be prevented from the outset. This education may include traditional village regulations (awig-awig) and formal legal frameworks applicable in the area.
Diversification of Tourist Destinations Distributing tourism more evenly across Bali is crucial so that all communities can benefit from the economic opportunities of the tourism industry. This strategy will also reduce overconcentration in already crowded destinations by redirecting tourists to alternative, less-visited locations.
Infrastructure and Transportation Management
Strong regulations are needed to manage infrastructure and transportation systems, especially to control the influx of traffic from outside the island. The government must also provide reliable and accessible public transportation. Restrictions on the number of motor vehicles, as well as comprehensive traffic and infrastructure planning, must be reviewed—considering aspects of road quality, traffic flow, and driver discipline.- Category
