Description(s)
Mads Lange was a native Dane who at the age of 17 landed on the shores of Lombok in 1834. He forged an alliance with the then Balinese King of Karangasem who was at war with the Lombok ruler of Mataram and then moved to establish a residence and trading centre on Kuta Beach. He was a clever businessman and maintained good relationships with a wide range of social and business partners. He established various business interests including a trade in "kepeng" coins from China, arms, gold, rice, silk and opium. He was reportedly disliked by Dutch colonial officials for his "fraternization" with local elements but his skills as a negotiator were frequently called upon to smooth over difficult situations. One the eve of a return trip to Europe, Mads Lange died in somewhat uncertain circumstances in Bali on 13th May 1856. His largely forgotten grave, guarded by a stone dalmation, can be found on a side street - Jalan Tuan Lange, just off Bali's busy bypass to Kuta.
