Wilayah Kelurahan Pedungan yang sekarang ini dahulu merupakan daerah perbatasan (tepi siring) dari Kerajaan Badung dengan Daerah Kekuasaan Kerajaan Mengwi di sebelah selatan. Pedungan berasal dari kata "duung" berarti senjata. Mendapatkan awalan pe- dan akhiran -an sehingga menjadi Pedungan yang berarti tempat pengadaan dan penyimpanan perlengkapan senjata.
