      [EN] A Hindu temple in Bali has one to several shrines or pelinggih. Pelinggih comes from the word 'lingga' which means the place where God is seated. When a pelinggih is made, the pelinggih cannot be called a holy place unless it is celebrated with a special ritual called Mendem Pedagingan.

      Mendem Pedagingan means to plant five types of metal at the base of a pelinggih. The metals used are gold, silver, iron, copper and tin. The five types of metal are planted at the base of a pelinggih as a sign that the pelinggih has become the place where God is seated therewith all forms of His energy.

      Therefore, a pelinggih is not the same building as a worldly building. This is what distinguishes between a sacred building (associated with Parahyangan) with ordinary buildings (associated with Pawongan and Palemahan). By the planting of sacred metals and purified objects, a holy place becomes a spiritual center and not anyone can enter. The temple is only open to those who want to pray and get closer to God. People who are not in the holy period because of death or menstruation are not permitted to enter the holy place.

      BA Parahyangan krama Hindune ring Bali maduwe asiki nyantos makudang-kudang palinggih. Palinggih mawit saking kruna lingga sane mateges genah stanan Ida Bhatara. Yening palinggih sampun puput, palinggih punika nenten wenang kabawos palinggih utawi genah sane suci yening nenten kaupacarayang antuk upacara sane kabawos Mendem Pedagingan.

      Mendem Pedagingan mateges nanem limang soroh wesi-wesian ring dasar palinggih. Sarwa wesi-wesian sane kaanggen inggih punika mas, salaka, wesi, tembaha miwah timah. Limang soroh wesi-wesian puniki kapendem ring dasar palinggih pinaka cihna palinggih punika sampun dados stanan Ida Bhatara sinarengan prabhawan Ida makasami.

      Nika mawinan, palinggih nenten ja pateh sakadi wewangunan biasa. Niki sane nyiosang wewangunan suci sane mapailetan ring Parahyangan miwan wewangunan biasa sane mapailetan ring Pawongan lan Palemahan . Sasampune wenten pedagingan sane suci puniki, genah punika dados genah suci, pinaka pusat spiritual tur nenten sami anake dados ngeranjing. Anake sane dados ngeranjing ring genah suci antah anak sane pacang mebhakti tur ngastiti Hyang Widhi. Anake sane kantun ring kahanan sane nenten suci, umpamine kantun sebel utawi menstruasi nenten kalugra ngeranjing ring genah suci utawi parahyangan.

      [ID] Suatu tempat suci Hindu di Bali memiliki beberapa pelinggih. Pelinggih berasal dari kata ‘lingga’ yang artinya tempat Tuhan berstana. Ketika sebuah pelinggih dibuat, pelinggih itu belum dapat disebut tempat suci apabila tidak diupacarai dengan sebuah ritual khusus bernama Mendem Pedagingan.

      Mendem Pedagingan artinya menanam lima jenis logam di dasar sebuah pelinggih. Logam-logam yang digunakan adalah emas, perak, besi, tembaga dan timah. Kelima jenis logam ini ditanam di bagian dasar sebuah pelinggih sebagai pertanda bahwa pelinggih telah menjadi tempat berstananya Tuhan beserta segala wujud energi-Nya.

      Karena itu, sebuah pelinggih bukanlah bangunan yang sama dengan bangunan secara duniawi. Inilah yang membedakan antara sebuah bangunan suci (yang terkait dengan Parahyangan) dengan bangunan biasa (yang terkait dengan Pawongan dan Palemahan). Dengan adanya pedagingan atau logam-logam dan benda-benda yang disucikan ini, suatu tempat suci menjadi pusat spiritual dan tidak sembarang orang boleh masuk. Tempat suci hanya terbuka bagi mereka yang ingin bersembahyang dan mendekatkan diri kepada Tuhan. Orang-orang yang sedang dalam masa tidak suci karena kematian atau datang bulan tidak diperkenankan memasuki tempat suci.
