    Information about Holiday or Ceremony

    Ngereh

Where did this ceremony take place:

    In English

After the pratima in the form of masks, rangdas or barongs have been repaired (see entry “Nebas Sesuhunan”), those pratima cannot just be directly worshipped in a temple. These pratimas have to go through a purification ceremony beforehand. The aim is to return the sacred energy into the pratima so that it is worthy of being worshipped by the people.

The purification ceremony of objects, houses or holy places is generally called Mlaspas. However, a ceremony called Ngereh is a special ceremony performed after or in conjunction with a pratima’s mlaspas ceremony in the form of barong or rangda. Ngereh is usually done at a cremation place (setra) at night. When this ceremony takes place, unusual things sometimes happen beyond logic. In some villages, only village leaders and priests are allowed to witness the Ngereh ceremony. Residents in general are not allowed to participate.

After the pratimas have regained their spiritual energy, the ceremony is continued with mlaspas and a series of other ceremonies that have been agreed upon by the village leaders and the priests. Only then do the pratima return to the temple as they were originally.
