Where did this ceremony take place:

      In English

[EN] Nangluk merana means “to subdue the plague”. The word ‘merana’ in Balinese language could mean epidemy or pests. If the plague has infected a lot of people and got worse, it is usually called “grubug” or “gering agung”. Related to agriculture, ‘merana’ means pests infecting crops. There is another term in Balinese language ‘basah’ to refer to pests. Therefore, in Balinese astrology, there are terms “basah gede” and “basah cenik”.

Nangluk Merana ritual is commonly conducted in Sasih Kanem (the sixth lunar month), usually on new moon’s day. Because Sasih Kanem (December-January) is a month of shift between dry season and rainy season, many kinds of tropical diseases usually emerge. The Nangluk Merana procession usually starts and ends at the Catuspata (the village’s main crossroad) or at Pura Bale Agung temple. If a village has deities in the form of statues (according to Hindu scriptures, a deity is different from a common statue) or barongs, those deities are put in procession around the village to give protection to the people.

In a real sense, Nangluk Merana ceremony must be accompanied by real action to keep the environment clean. No matter how big a ceremony is, if environmental care is neglected, diseases and miseries will always come. Diseases and disasters happen because human beings do not take care of the environment. Managing wastes and keeping the surroundings clean are real action for Nangluk Merana which is equally important to rituals. One more thing which is very essential is to cleanse oneself from bad characters.

      In Indonesian

[ID] Nangluk merana berarti “menundukkan wabah”.
