    Pangerupukan (Tawur Agung Kasanga)

Where did this ceremony take place:

    In English

[EN] Pangerupukan day falls on the new moon’s day of the ninth month, which is the last day of one Saka year. The next day, the Balinese celebrate silent Nyepi day as the first day of the new Saka year. On Pangerupukan day, the Balinese carry Ogoh-ogoh (giant doll, representing demons) in colorful and splendid parades as a symbol of driving away evil characters in one’s self. In every house, every family conduct special ceremony by liting torch made of dry coconut leaves. This is called “obor danyuh”. People hit metal pans, wooden bells or big metal bowls to create noises. This is believed to expell bad lucks. This is a closing festival of the year. On the day of Ngarupuk, the Balinese commonly prepare daily needs to welcome Nyepi day. When the day falls, streets are crowded by people and the Ogoh-ogoh parades. Before midnight, many streets are closed and the pecalangs (traditional security officers) start doing their jobs. All lamps on the island of the gods are turned off at 6 AM on Nyepi day because one day according to Hindu calendar starts at sunrise.
