        Ter-Teran (Siat Api) di Karangasem

Where did this ceremony take place:

        In English

There are three traditional villages in Karangasem that do fire fighting on Pangrupukan day, namely Seraya, Jasri and Saren. This tradition is carried out every two years when the Saka year number falls on an odd number. Usually, the Ter-Teran tradition takes place on the night of Pangrupukan (see entry “Tawur Agung Kasanga”), along with the Ngusaba Muu-Muu ceremony in the local village.

In this tradition of fire warfare or siat api, the torch is made of danyuh (dry coconut leaves) tied together with wood or bamboo slats. The burning stick was then thrown between the two groups of residents, namely North Jasri and South Jasri.

This fire war is closely related to the Pangrupukan ceremony aiming to expell bad luck. By lighting a fire, the darkness will disappear. This fire war means that each person must light a fire within themselves so that the darkness of the mind can be eliminated.
