        Information about Holiday or Ceremony

        Ngerebeg di Desa Tegal Darmasaba

Where did this ceremony take place:

        In English

Ngrebeg is actually not a single ceremony in a village. Many traditional villages in Bali (called Desa Pakraman) hold their own annual or semestral Ngrebeg ceremony. It is a common yearly procession based on lunar month (Sasih) or every six month on the basis of Wuku calendar. The procession of Ngrebeg ceremony is totally exceptional in every village. In Tegallalang, for instance, Ngrebeg is more likely to be a Balinese Haloween. Teenagers and young adults paint their bodies pink or blue, and then walk on colorful parade around the village. Ngrebeg in Tabanan is commonly associated with crops and harvests.

Ngerebeg at Tegal Darmasaba village, Badung, is something different. Held every Thursday Kliwon of Langkir week, this crowded and spectacular festival is more likely to be a ritual of countering misfortunes. On the Ngrebeg day, all kinds of sacred barongs preserved in village temples gather into one huge colorful procession. Gambelan beleganjur (a kind of Balinese marching orchestra) guard the procession both in front and behind. There are boar barongs from Pura Puseh, tiger barongs from Pura Kaja, some fierceful-looking rangdas, and a golden barong from Pura Dalem. Some sacred amulets and heirlooms in the form of kriss swords and masks are also brought for procession. There are tens of barongs in the parade, followed by hundreds of people. Streets are closed from vehicles and children run happily, sneaking in the crowds.

The tradition keepers believe that Ngrebeg is meant to give protection to the villagers. Those barongs are guardians of the village, because the Hindus believe that there are many subtle beings higher than human’s status. They contribute to safety, prosperity and wealth of mankind. They are indeed pure spirits who protect the people and are thus respected properly.
