Where did this ceremony take place:

        In English

Ngelawang is a Balinese tradition of taking barongs (Balinese wooden zoomorphic figure) to procession around the village. Ngelawang is commonly done by the villagers every Galungan and Kuningan day. In some villages, especially Tegal Darmasaba (Badung), Taro (Gianyar), Baturiti (Tabanan), and many more, ngelawang is done in a big and splendid procession. There will be many barongs and gambelan orchestra along the village street. It has always become spactacular and splendid moment.

Ngelawang means ‘to go from doorway to doorway’. It comes from the word ‘lawang’ which means ‘gate’. On Galungan and Kuningan day, the barongs who are guardian angels of the village go around to give blessings and protection to the people. The villagers usually offer canang (flower offering), cakes and incense whenever the barongs pass in front of their houses. Some barongs are sacred and some others are just child’s plays. Sacred barongs always have sacred cloth with rajah (Balinese protective calligraphy) on their necks, umbrellas, sacred banners and pengawin (sacred flags). Sacred barongs are commonly taken to procession by pemangku (holy men) who bring holy water to be freely distributed to the people.

Ngelawang is the happiest moment for children and teenagers. They learn to get into the society and make friends. Socially, the procession introduces them to their surroundings. From educational viewpoint, this tradition brings them to do some physical activities rather than playing gadget all the time.
